Who We Are

In order to honor Peter Wulff’s work as a humanitarian and teacher his family felt that establishing a school or providing some form of education so that marginalized people could support themselves would be something that Peter would like as his legacy. Having worked with disadvantaged youth Peter was inspired by the concept of teaching youth to become social entrepreneurs. He felt that children developed a strong sense of self and empathy as they became involved with hardships of others. Most of all they realised how much their actions helped others. This translated into positive values and leadership skills that endured over time. Youth find a purpose in their lives through ideas and action. These ideas created the Peter Wulff Center that would bring Peter’s idea into action. Chess Without Borders already had a long standing relationship with Project Why. Some volunteers from Barrington and teacher Maggie Gruber from District 220 had visited Project Why in India so continuing this relationship was transparent, easy and accessible. The goals were attainable as the center needed $5000 per year to run. Youth social entrepreneurs also had an opportunity to generate ideas and achieve goals with mentorship provided by community members. The history of the relationship between Project Why and Board members goes back to 2008 when Nina Sethi was volunteering as a teacher at Project Why. She noticed a bright little 4 year old girl, severely disfigured girl named Meher Hussain coming to the center. Nina wondered why Meher received no treatment for her burns. She realized there was no health insurance for people living in poverty. Nina knew her brother started a chess program combining education with service and philanthropy so Nina asked him to raise funds for Meher’s treatment. Meher underwent plastic surgery and education with funds raised from the Barrington chess program. Today Meher is 20 years old and hoping to enter medical school. The relationship continued over the years and later a computer center was established at Project Why to bring technology learning to about 330 youth at Project Why.
